The “Space Fairy” story…
SpaceFairy was originally a character I created in order to justify wearing fairy wings and knee-high boots to the Brisbane Supanova Pop Culture Expo, in early 2007. Armed with a handmade pink & silver bubble-gun, and sparkling wings, I ran amok with my friends around the city all weekend, just having so much fun while not caring what people thought about me.
I could act outrageous and get away with it, because I was in costume, playing a character. And I was surrounded by hundreds of people doing the same thing. And it was fun. I don’t think I’ve had so much fun since kindergarten!
At the time, SpaceFairy captured the essence of who I was becoming, like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon after a storm (damn that sounded poetic!) After experiencing a tumultuous time in my life, I suddenly felt reinvigorated, extremely light-hearted, and eager to have some fun. You now how, when you have been so extremely stressed, so that you can’t possibly stress any more, then you just crack, and you stop worrying about anything? That was me. It was kinda like being re-born… except not.
So anyway, I was basically using a convention full of cosplayers as an excuse to dress however the hell I felt like, amidst a sea of characters from established movies & television, sci-fi, comic books and anime. I didn’t anticipate that people would be so curious as to who I was. All weekend people asked to have their photos taken with me, as well as asking me what movie or series I was from. A thought suddenly occurred to me…
“My own!” I replied.
A few weeks later, the SpaceFairy domain was registered, and preliminary plans were drawn up for a short film, web-comic, and other creative SpaceFairy- related pursuits.
And this, my dear friend, is one of them. Enjoy!
Keep the funness,
SpaceFairy
