Supanova ‘09
Well, it’s time to start planning my costume for Supanova ‘09! Supanova Pop Culture Expo is the funnest festival to hit Brisbane. Check it out here: www.supanova.com.au . Me & my Brisbane Sci-Fi crew go every year. Each year the costumes get more and more elaborate. It’s one of the few times of year where it’s considered not unusual to run around Brisbane dressed like a stormtrooper or a wacky anime critter. Sure, people still look at you weird, but they’re boring so who cares about them, right? ;p
It’s also a mad-fun excuse to hang out with famous celebrities from your favourite movies, tv-shows, games and comic books, and score their autograph or even get a photo with them. I myself have space-fairied it up with folks as cool as:
- John Schneider (The original Bo Duke, and Clark Kent’s dad in the TV series Smallville)
- Summer Glau (River from the series “Firefly” and the movie “Serenity“, also played Tess in “4400“)
- Aaron Douglas (”Battlestar Galactica“)
- Billy Dee Williams (Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back)
- Ron Glass (”Firefly” & “Serenity“)
- Karl Urban ***SCORE!!!*** (”Lord of the Rings“, “Xena”, and he plays Bones McCoy in the new Star Trek movie! He’s so preetty. He totally loves me)
- Teryl Rothery (The doctor in “Stargate: SG1“)
- Jewel Staite (Kaylee the lovestruck engineer in “Firefly“, “Serenity“, and also “Stargate Atlantis“
- James Kyson Lee (”Heroes“)
- Lou Ferrigno (The original “Incredible Hulk“)
…and those are only the folks I met at Brisbane Supanova! (My collection from my earlier Sydney escapades is also quite large and impressively awesome)
Oh, by the way, this is what I’m thinking of wearing to Supanova this year…
Kali kicked butt!
Well, Kali totally came through for me. Less than two days after my last post, the situation was totally sorted to the benefit of all. I’m now working part time (win-win for all), and organised the most awesome engagement party ever, despite having absolutely no money. (Videos & piccies coming soon- or see my Facebook). See- magick really does work, YEAHH!!! ![]()
My No BS Scholarship Entry
My passion is inspiring people to live magickal, joy- filled lives. I am now creating the largest “book temple” (that’s book shop- I love books!) on the Internet, specializing in tools designed to inspire people from all over the world to live their best lives imaginable!
I have some really big ideas, and the passion to make it happen. I’ve got most of the skills I’ll need, and I’m outsourcing the rest. I am a marketing goddess. I’ve done my business and market research, and I’m really excited because this is going to be HUGE!
The website is almost ready to go, the suppliers are lined up, the offline publicity efforts sorted, and I’ve already got future customers (“fans”) knocking down my door waiting for
me to get started. The logistics are sorted, the technology set up, the business and marketing plan almost ready to go, and the home office will be set up when my new fiancé and I move into our first home next month (excitingness!)
Of course I don’t yet have all the funding required to actually get totally set up yet but that’s just a minor detail, soon to be rectified as I am quite creative and resourceful (and majored in Creative Industries and Business Entrepreneurship at university- not that all of it was that useful it turns out).
New Beginnings
Well it seems I was right. Amazing new things are happening for me as my life continues to transform in the direction of my dreams.
- I moved to a (better) new home
- My exciting new business venture is close on the horizon
- I won a scholarship to study with a new business school which is blazing trails in the field of business education
and…
***News Just In*** I’M ENGAGED!!!
The moving thing: On the weekend I officially moved into Scott’s apartment. It’s a temporary move (with my stuff in storage) until we move into our own house in August (be prepared for a massive engagement & housewarming party!)
Exciting New Business Venture: www.magicklightworker.com Stay Tuned!
The Scholarship: It’s called The New Order Business School (Or No BS for short!) The competition was fierce, and in the end they actually awarded the scholarship to three recipients (I was one of them). They specialise in teaching all that good stuff which you need to learn to be successful in business, but which you’ll likely never learn from school or university (I certainly didn’t, and I went to one of the “best” universities in the country). I might not get a government certified degree at the end of this, but I’m learning from really successful business people who have made it and are already living the life of their dreams- the kind of people I want as mentors.
Getting engaged to My Soulmate!!! -So sweet it deserves it’s own post! What can I say- he’s my honey. We’ve got soo much in common and being with him just feels like home. I finally have someone to share my life with and it feels GOOD. My super-sparkly diamond engagement ring is almost off lay-by… be prepared to be dazzled with lots of photos soon!
Okay… I have a lot of catching up to do here so get ready for a rapid succession of posts within a short period of time! YAY
Updatedness :)
What a weird month. I’ve dumped the old boyfriend, traded up to a new one, rediscovered how awesome Star Trek is, pissed off my former best friends because I have no more patience for men who treat women badly, started the hunt for a new city apartment, and had he flu to top it all off- twice. Yay.
All up though, I’m feeling pretty good at the moment. Work’s going well, my new (younger) boyfriend is awesome and I genuinely haven’t been so happy with a guy for many years. I’ve gone back to my nerdy roots (where I belong) and I finally made that pink Transformers T-Shirt I’ve been talking about for a while. But yeah, all this change has made me a bit distracted, so if you haven’t heard from me for a while that’s probably why! P.S. New photos from Supanova Pop Culture Expo, including me and Jewel Staite (Kaylee from Firefly & Serenity) coming soon…
My first day at my new day job
Here is me playing on Photobooth at work…
Hooray for first days!
My first brave speech
Scene One:
ANZ Stadium, Brisbane (Apparently Michael Jackson played here once…)
The Speech I was meant to say:
“Hi, I’m Melinda Maxfield. I am a networker, uni student and soon-to-be author. Jenny and Arthur are amazing business mentors. They have repeatedly gone out of their way to help me, and this has included driving up from the Gold Coast to Brisbane twice a week to counsel me while helping me to start my team. They are awesome and I really appreciate everything they’ve done for me…”
(Now I am on stage, I notice that among those giving me a standing ovation are 30+ multi-millionaires sitting in the front row, followed by half a team of really hot looking professional footballers whom I’ve previously only seen on TV…)
So, What I said instead:
“I have no idea what it was I was going to say… but I’m really excited to be here!!”
(Cheering and wild applause!)
…and off goes giggly Mel to find the nearest Toastmasters meeting…
1 commentBusiness & Cocktails!
Q. “So in this business of yours do you actually DO any work?”
A. “Sure I do. In fact, I’m working right now”.
Q. “So are these cocktails tax deductible?”
A. “Let’s find out!”
The Event: Network 21 Business Development Seminar
Location: Royal Pines Resort, Gold Coast
Who says business meetings are boring? Hot guys in business suits, including the Gold Coast Titans, sparkles, fancy resorts and COCKTAILS!!! *Who wants to join my business?* ;p
1 commentWhere I’m at!
Lately, everytime I’ve started thinking about writing a new blog post, I feel slightly lost for words and overwhelmed with the possible choices of news to write about. You see, I’ve got a lot going on in my life right now. I am undertaking tremendous change and personal growth at the moment, which while I’m still in the midst of, I cannot even begin to put into words eloquently what I am currently experiencing except to say… WOW!!
Super-Super-Brief rundown of where I’m at, without explaining much:
- Awesome boyfriend. I once suspected that I hated men. Now I think that my “anti-man barriers” have been melted forever (and it’s a good feeling!)
- My awesome new marketing business! This is going swimmingly so far (well from my perspective it is, and let’s face it, it’s all about perspective. I’m learning HEAPS)
- Finding my fantastic business mentors. This is something which successful people have done through the ages, so I thought, “Hey- why not me aswell!”
I have since befriended the most amazing group of successful entrepreneurs, and at the moment I am recieving mentoring and “business training” from a lovely South African living on the Gold Coast. Recently they have been travelling up to Brisbane as much as twice a week, specifically to help me get started in my business (incidentally, they also have a partial stake in my future success- which is also good incentive!) - A new attitude towards life, thanks to the business training program I have been immersed in lately. I have been getting up at 5:30am to jog in the park, and I haven’t watched TV in weeks! (Which I’m totally NOT missing by the way!)
Holiday Adventures #2 Sydney NYE
NYE was awesome for me because…
- While it rained back home in Brisbane, and fireworks were cancelled along the Gold Coast due to freakish weather, I was living it up in beautiful Sydney!
- Darling Harbour! Getting back here was fantastic, and not only because we had the best spot (right on the water) for the NYE fireworks. I used to work and live here many years ago. I have lots of awesome memories here so it was great to be back.
- I hung out with my friend Linda, who is one of my longest-standing friends but who I rarely see in person.
- I also hung out with my little sis, who I also rarely see since we live in different states. Even though she resembles a model I still love her!
- Free entertainment in Darling Harbour- and we got the best seat in the house. This was especially awesome for…
- “Bjorn Again”- Best ABBA cover band in the world! (Don’t laugh, they totally rocked… especially when they did Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer”, which I admit was strange seeing someone wailing like Bon Jovi, but dressed in an “ABBA” costume). [Video Coming Soon]
- Hot naked guys on rooftops (alas the only perving was done from afar… sorry no photos).
- Hot policemen strutting around, keepin’ the peace (Had photos but thought I shouldn’t post them).
- Hot men around Darling Harbour… all of whom were with their girlfriends sadly.
- I actually got a seat on the train. (Naaah I didn’t bother photographing that).
- I spent the next day recovering here, at my Dad’s North Sydney resort… I love my Dad’s pool!
So, even though I didn’t meet a Prince from Denmark (In 2000 I was outside the place where Mary and that guy met, but totally missed out!) Funness was still had by all.
P.S. Eat your heart out Brisbane!
1 commentSpaceFairy: The Next Generation
This cute toy’s name is Melinda. ![]()
It belongs to my little cousin Victoria. She named it after me (My name is Melinda also) because I am her favourite cousin and she loves me (aaw how sweet!).
For Christmas I bought her some pink fairy wings and a princess crown. “I look like a Space Fairy!” she exclaimed when she tried them on. I didn’t even know she had heard the phrase “Space Fairy” before. She’s only five so I’m pretty sure she doesn’t read my blog yet.
After posing for 20+ photos wearing her wings (her idea by the way!) it was clear that Victoria is in fact, “Space Fairy: The Next Generation”. (Which is cool, because the way I’m currently going, I’m more likely to become a crazy cat lady than to have kids).
P.S. Pete is becoming way more awesome than I previously realised. I can be my crazy normal self around him without trying, and he still likes me. I find that comforting, and really, really cool ☺
Holiday Adventures #1 Sydney Xmas
My refusal to work in retail this season paid off! Sure- I had to work in a gentlemen’s club instead, but at least they closed over the break so I could spend Christmas with my family in Sydney!
…this also meant that I could afford to buy Christmas presents, for the first time in the four years since I’ve been a university student. And what did I spend my hard earned cash on for my family?
…and fairy-princess costumes!
It’s clear who the crazy one in this family is (well, besides Aunty Isa and her many fake floral arrangements). But when you see what I grew up with you’ll understand why I had to break the family tradition and mix it up a little bit…
So yeah, Christmas was good. But rather than boring you with our happy holiday stories, here is the plot from an old South Park episode, entitled “Mr Hankey, The Christmas Poo”… for some reason I thought it was appropriate…
(From Wikipedia…)
“This Christmas-themed episode of South Park opens as the children rehearse their Christmas play. They are performing a Christian Nativity, and when Kyle’s mother hears of this, she is angered by the play, because her son, a Jew, plays the role of Joseph. Mrs. Broflovski is offended by the Christian imagery, and demands that the religious elements be taken out of the public school Christmas pageant. Kyle suggests they celebrate Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo as a non-religious substitute, but since he is the only one who believes in Mr. Hankey, his suggestion is rejected.
Mrs. Broflovski’s demands trigger uproar in the town, and so it is decided that anything offensive to anyone will be removed from the Christmas celebrations, including Santa Claus, wreaths, trees, stars, lights, and candy canes. Kyle is embarrassed by his mother’s actions, and turns to Mr. Hankey for solace, who, it turns out, is a real-life talking piece of poo. Kyle tries to introduce Mr. Hankey to the masses, but no one believes in him, and most are in fact horrified at the idea of a talking piece of poo. Kyle’s efforts result in mishaps, such as flinging Mr. Hankey (who looks like a normal piece of feces to everyone else) at Cartman and slipping feces into Mr. Mackey’s coffee. Mr. Mackey declares Kyle a “clinically depressed fecalphiliac on Prozac” and Kyle’s friends have him committed.
Ultimately, the school Christmas pageant is stripped of all semblance of Christmas, as anything that does resemble Christmas is deemed offensive by someone. Instead, the children present a minimalist song and dance created by Philip Glass. The parents, astounded by how awful the pageant is, begin blaming one another for destroying Christmas, and a fight breaks out. Finally, Mr. Hankey reveals himself to everyone, and scolds everyone, saying that in spending so much time trying to find what’s wrong with Christmas, they forgot everything that was “so right about it” — singing songs, cookies and goodwill towards men. The townspeople release Kyle from the asylum and apologize, and they all watch Mr. Hankey fly away with Santa Claus”.
…And here is a humorous video of Jesus and Santa singing Christmas carols.
Hello Hello from Sydney :)
Hey everyone, just a quick message to say that I’m still alive! Gotta love the Blue Mountains… no sign of an internet cafe for hours. Crazy backward mountain-people! ;p
When you read this I should be on my way up to Northern NSW, where I shall endeavor to tell you of all my super-amazing Sydney adventures (like climbing down the side of a mountain, getting my first international book publishing contract, doing an internet marketing course, sneaking into rich people’s pools in North Sydney, playing in waterfalls at the top of cliffs and not dying…) Aaah I haven’t been on the internet for so long that my brain’s all jammed up from the backlog of stuff I want to say! Please check back later and all shall be revealed gradually- when I can get my breath back!
Until then…
Be excellent to each other ![]()
Where I’ve been hiding…
Hello everyone,
Sorry I disappeared for a bit. I currently have about a week’s worth of emails to get through (it’s a lot!) so please bear with me for a bit longer.
I’ve been a bit busy…
- Working my arse off (waitressing) so I’ll have extra money to…
- Start my marketing business, while…
- Developing my new website which is launching soon (stay tuned for details!)
- Planning for a “Think and grow Rich” Mastermind study group with friends
- Writing a book chapter about fairies (I am a contributing author)
- Preparing for my trip to Sydney
- While sort of dating someone in what little spare time I have left! Phew!!
And tomorrow I leave for Sydney for christmas, and I shant be back until after New Year’s. I’m looking forward to catching up/ partying with my Sydney and Canberra friends (Watch out! I have a camera now! No-one is safe! haha)
My new business mentors have sent me on a bit of a quest to find a few good people with leadership skills/ who would like to learn leadership skills, to set up a new group in Sydney. If anyone knows anyone there who might want to meet for a chat about the possibility of making some extra income, let me know soon okay, because I’ll only be in Sydney for a few weeks, and I plan on making the most of it!
More updates soon!
Brightest Blessings xox
Facebook marketing propoganda
Well, I’ve successfully managed to go a whole week without video-documenting something. Hooray! (My friends convinced me to stay away from video blogging while recovering from dental surgery this time).
But what will I distract myself with if I’m not making documentary videos about random stuff?
Facebook.
…Feel the addictiveness.
It kind of shits me that Superwall has become yet another avenue to spread meaningless forwarded drivel/ aka spam rather than being an avenue for conversation and relationship building [over the internet] which I suspect it was originally intended to be (…or something like that).
Tonight’s my favourite marketing lecturer’s birthday, and that got me thinking about all the cool stuff she taught us about Integrated Marketing Communication, and how marketing has to change from the obsolete methods of yesteryear; Niche marketing vs. mass marketing; 1 on 1 relationship building rather than blanket advertising which treats everyone like a faceless clone. They have no choice if they want to sell stuff now. Generation-Y public caught onto what they were doing before, and are naturally suspicious of mass advertising (or of anyone who assumes they understand their individual needs and wants when clearly they don’t).
Anyway, I was thinking that all the forwarded chain letters on Facebook are kinda like the mass marketing of yesteryear which everyone hates so much (kinda like it but not). It’s the whole “lets send a bunch of stuff out to hundreds of random people to make it look like we care about them as a person, but really we don’t give an arse, as long as they see it comes from us and hence they think of us-albeit briefly- so as to increase our brand awareness”. Am I right??
P.S. Just to be crazy/ random, here’s me with a sparkly pink butterfly and a boat I’m thinking of buying…
2 commentsWhy the hell am I working at a Gentlemen’s club?!
WTF?!
Welcome to Friday night at the club…
- Having to remind drunk men that I am ONLY A WAITRESS and should they wish to book a stripper, please see reception
- Working behind the bar with minimal training and almost zero knowledge of alcohol (”how the hell do you make…”)
- STRIPPER FIGHTS! in the back room (how amusing)
- Having several hot guys try to give me their phone number, and actually exercising some SELF CONTROL for perhaps the first time in my life when it comes for men (It’s all about setting BOUNDARIES ;p)
- Being invited to Saudi Arabia (I haven’t had that one before!)
- Being asked repeatedly to dance (with my clothes on) because apparently I’m prettier than all the strippers and they only want to see me. Really? Awww shucks… I’m still not doing it! ;p
- Being told by countless men that my boyfriend is the luckiest guy on earth (hope he knows it
So why the hell am I working at a gentlemen’s club?!? I was wondering the same thing… then I counted my tips for the night…
Almost $100 in tips for a few hours work.
(It sort of makes up for the interestingness! ;p)
